The Impossible Truth Presented in Macau

On 22 May, The Impossible Truth by João Miguel Barros was presented in Macau during a session moderated by curator and art historian Margarida Saraiva.

The publication celebrates the 30th anniversary of To Add One Meter to an Anonymous Mountain, the landmark 1995 performance created by a group of Chinese artists associated with the Beijing East Village, now regarded as one of the defining moments of contemporary Chinese performance art.

Developed through several years of research, The Impossible Truth brings together archival materials, interviews, testimonies and previously unpublished images, revisiting the artistic and historical context surrounding the performance and the artists involved in it throughout the 1990s.

The bilingual publication, presented in both English and Chinese, has generated significant interest within artistic circles in China and follows previous presentations held in Lisbon and at PHOTOFAIRS Shanghai 2026 earlier this month.

The Macau presentation further extended the international dialogue surrounding the book and its critical reflection on memory, authorship, documentation and the construction of artistic narratives.
