−40°C: 2015–2020

−40 °C brings together A Yin’s long-term photographic study of Mongolian horses and the communities whose lives remain closely connected to them. Developed over several winters along the Chinese–Mongolian and Chinese–Russian border regions, the book combines black-and-white photographs, documentary texts and field notes in Mongolian, Chinese and English.

Through the stories of three horse herders from Mongolian, Han and Ewenki communities, A Yin records contemporary pastoral life, the conditions faced by Mongolian horses and the cultural traditions surrounding them. Conceived, edited and colour-corrected by the artist himself, the publication reflects the patience and perseverance that define the project. Awarded the title of one of China’s “Most Beautiful Books” in 2021, −40 °C brings image and text together as complementary forms of visual and cultural memory.
